100 Years of Nine Lessons & Carols from The Choir of King's College

For those who enjoy the inimitable Christmas carols of The Choir of King's College, this new collection, 100 Years of Nine Lessons & Carols, is a truly glorious combination of both new and old recordings.

It can be sampled at Amazon <https://amzn.to/2L5AGG6>, iTunes, and Hyperion, and for those with streaming music services, hopefully it is included.  It is also available on CD.

  1. I haven't missed the Christmas Eve broadcast in years. Used to hear it for many years on shortwave via BBC World Service, but in more recent years I hear it online via BBC Radio 4. The opening Once in David's Royal City never fails to send shivers up and down my back, and inevitably my eyes grow a bit misty here and there as the service progresses. In a word, beautiful.

    Best Regards,

    Heinz-Ulrich

  2. The Kings College CDs are always a joy to listen to. I have bought many CDs from Hyperion Records and strongly recommend its wonderful Romantic concerto series of recordings. I love my complete sets of Bach, Rachmaninov and Liszt music (especially organ and piano) from Hyperion too.

It's the small labels like Hyperion, Chandos and Harmonia Mundi who are delivering new recordings when the big labels are mainly repackaging the old favourites. I urge you to buy them whilst you can (Hyperion nearly folded a few years ago after losing a costly legal battle) and CDs are ideal Christmas gifts.

  4. Our church has done lessons and carols for about ten years - ever since we were without a rector one year and I was the senior warden. I’ve loved the service since childhood, watch the PBS telecast and listen to it on the radio, and listen to the CD throughout Advent and Christmas.

  5. The boarding school where I work just had our Lessons and Carols service yesterday afternoon: the last all-school chapel service before the Christmas holiday begins later this week. It was beautiful. The chapel was fully decorated in greens with candles copiously placed all around.

  6. Fantastic recommendation! Its not a proper Christmas with the Kings College Choir carols and lessons. Obviously must include Sussex carol.

  7. I have been asked to do three readings for our nine lessons in carols on the 23rd. I'm looking forward to being able to participate in this meaningful service.

  8. The Fordham University choir puts on a wonderful Festival of Lessons and Carols backed by the Bronx Arts Ensemble at the start of Advent every year. They put on two concerts, one at the Rose Hill campus and another at St. Paul the Apostle adjacent to their Manhattan campus. Well worth going to, and the event is free.
