  1. I found the reposted Irish blackthorn walking stick thread fascinating:

The same trees don't grow here, but perhaps others would do. Sounds like an interesting project for winter.

I have a birch hiking staff that was a sapling I cut down (yup), which I've had for 40+ years now. It's been to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and other places, thank to the influence of Colin Fletcher. However I've never considered it as an emergency weapon. Hmmm.

Anyway, the photo above shows a nice hallway armory in case the house is attacked.

  3. A friend gave me a Red Sox cap (from Fenway) for my collection of hats & caps. I replied that I didn't have one. She said, yeah, they hang off your collection of walking sticks. I replied that I didn't have one of those either. She asked what was in that old painted milk can in the hall. I replied....oh, yeah, that.

  4. My tangle of sticks needs to be thinned because when I pull out one, several more come along because the jug is jammed packed

  5. You know, I really should get me a seat stick.

  6. Avid hiker & walker throughout my 20s & 30s - never considered walking sticks. Now as my knees are a little less resilient, bought my first at the local hardware store. I am seeing walking sticks all over the place, of course thanks to AR - flea markets, craft shows & even hardware stores!

  7. I have three umbrella stands full of canes and walking sticks in various places in my house. One of the the umbrella stands also contains a shooting stick and a rattan carpet beater for no other reason than they look right at home with the canes and walking sticks.
