Out and About (The Extra Volvos Edition)

    2. I was recently in the market for a new vehicle, and after copious research and test drives, purchased a pristine, certified 2016 XC70 with the last of the classic T5 engine. Wife and I could not be happier. Have historically been more of a BMW person, but the wagon has been a revelation. So far my only dislike has been the guilt I feel after throwing bags of mulch and soil in the back of something that is still so clean and new.

      Now, regarding the new wagons: I also test drove the V90CC, and although it is no longer as boxy and utilitarian as its ancestors, I do quite like its aggressive stance (particularly with Thule accessories) and soothing interior. I think Volvo has really nailed "understated luxury" with this one, and the Ocean Race edition I recently sat in was just gorgeous. I have also started to see these pop around my preppy neck of the woods in NJ, where XC70's are fairly abundant. The only issue with actually buying the V90 is that the platform and engine choices are too new to ascertain longevity. I'm also not sure how I feel about a touch-screen only interface in a car. The new V60 should be out soon, and I have a feeling that the cross country variant could be more of a successor to the current 70 than the 90 is.

      Nevertheless, I'd recommend going to the local dealer and giving the 90 a spin. Certainly worth experiencing first hand.

  4. The orange daylilies remind me of the ones growing along the driveway to my grandparents' house when I was a child. And the zinnias! My grandfather gave me a section of the garden each year and a package of zinnia seeds to plant there. I'm sure that's why zinnias always make me so happy.

    1. More likely a duck. Seals come down from northern waters into Long Island Sound for the winter months, but are usually gone by mid-April.

  6. Those chickens would taste good with the sweet corn. Melt a stick of butter, pour in a cup or so of vinegar, then a whole bunch of ground black pepper, keep the pan hot on the grill so it stays melted, and brush it on those chickens from time to time while they are grilling. Yum.

  9. Just remember folks, Volvo is now owned by the Chinese company, GEELEY. While they were owned by Ford, they were, unfortunately stuffed full of parts also used in Ford's cars, so after the transfer of ownership, Volvo's supply chain was very much dependent on Ford engineering and parts.

    1. My daily beater is a Ford-era Volvo, and with a little research it's possible for me to save hundreds of dollars on parts where they shared platforms. I can't control where they were made or what parts they came with, but in this case I sure can take advantage of Ford's global reach during that time and flex that frugality muscle. Really happen to like the styling of the new Volvo offerings, but don't know anyone who owns one to get solid intel on what they're like.

    2. I enjoy your comments, Paul, but having worked in the auto industry for over twenty years, including a stint in Sweden for a Volvo supplier, I object to a few items in your post. Only the small Volvos, primarily produced in Belgium, were based on Ford platforms during their ownership of the company. The implication in your comment is that Ford of Europe forced inferior suppliers on Volvo, which I can say from experience is untrue. The fact is that the auto supply chain is totally global and many car companies buy from the same suppliers, regardless of geography or where the company is domiciled. Also, according to accounts from staunch capitalist sources such as Bloomberg and Forbes, Geely has been a good steward of the Volvo Cars product and brand. Unfortunately, SAAB Automobile was unable to find such a benefactor and has passed into history, which was no doubt devastating to the little town of Trollhattan, Sweden, where those cars were built.
