    1. The earlier T-34 Mentors like these had reciprocating engines, and the turbine powered Turbo Mentors started coming on line in the early 70s. Very durable and forgiving aircraft, unlike their cousin the Beechcraft Bonanza AKA "the fork-tailed doctor killer". It says something for their longevity that the Navy has only recently retired them as a primary trainer.
