From the Porch: Deer Crossing

  1. We have nine in our group this winter. They pass through a few times during the day and evening sometimes coming up under the bird feeders. My husband would prefer they NOT eat the shrubbery! PA

  2. I awoke before the rest of the house this morning and went down to make coffee. I could see a group of 7-8 deer through the kitchen window. They were lying along a south-facing slope trying to stay warm.

I watched them for a few moments as I set up the coffee pot, making the first cups of the day. Then, the dogs woke and startled the deer as they ran down the steps and out into the back yard. What had been a serene, contemplative few moments suddenly turned into a cacophony of bark-bark-barking!

But I do like the deer.

  3. The video clip is priceless. The deer look so young and seem generally unspooked and unaware that they are being watched and filmed. I worry that deer in shoreline communities in Connecticut have suffered greatly at the hands of coyotes (or, as a fascinating article you shared a few months back explained, a sort of new species--combination coyote, wolf and dog.) What chance do these adorable, gentle creatures have? You are so lucky to have them as neighbors.

  4. how beautiful!
thank you for this silent and pristinely cold treat.
I hope they found something to eat that sustains them.
but they appear to be pretty healthy.

  5. Very pretty. Gentle creatures. A question--why the logs propped up on the wall?
