  2. I've been to one years back in Locust Valley, complete with parading in the Haggis with a Piper.
    I declined to sample it....

    1. I wouldn't eat haggis on a bet. My ancestors came here centuries ago so that neither they nor their children would ever again be reduced to eating the laird's garbage.

    2. Haggis is delicious! Especially with some neeps and tatties...and maybe some whisky to wash it down. Suit yourself, I guess--more for me!

    3. It's at those times when haggis is offered that I am most happy to be vegetarian. I'll take broccoli with my whiskey, please.

  3. There's a story told in my husband's family of an ancestor to come to North America from Scotland in the late 1700s. He brought with him all his books, which apparently were quite a lot, and when the ship encountered a rough storm, the crew decided the books had to go overboard. The ancestor requested that he at least be able to keep the family Bible, and this was allowed. As it turned out, however, the book he saved was the first volume of published works by Robert Burns. This was said to have been an accident due to the confusion resulting from the storm. But one does wonder.

  6. We also hosted a Burns Night supper last weekend but we took liberties and substituted meatloaf for haggis. I know purists won't approve but we called it "Southern haggis." I have been to several formal Burns Nights and used to be too intimidated to host my own, but I have discovered that a relaxed atmosphere with good Scottish music, candlelight, tartan, the Selkirk Grace, Burns' poems and lots of toasts and Scotch makes a fun evening still honoring the Bard and all things Scottish.
