The Late Great Fligors of Edgartown

Some may remember the Vineyard's Fligors, an anchor of not just Edgartown, but also the front page of the Vineyard Gazette with their familiar advertisement spot.   It was, learned in a conversation with Carol Fligor, the first store to carry Vera Bradley and the first store to carry Vineyard Vines.

Fligors was to Edgartown what Shreve's was to Boston,  The Whitney Shop to New Canaan, The Greene Gallery to Guilford, Black's to Wolfeboro, and Scully & Scully to Park Avenue.

  1. Ah, Shreve's. When I was 6 I went there with my great aunt. I don't remember what she was buying but the man behind the counter let me try on and wear for quite some time, what at my age seemed to be the most stupendous diamond ring. Years later, I picked up my own engagement ring there. I miss the old store.

  2. Fligors was the best. I purchased two madras sport coats from them and happily I still have one. They had a great men's shop and a festive Christmas shop. I was sad when they closed.

  3. On my daughters first birthday she wore a pink birthday hat with the number one in sparkles. I purchased it at Fligors as they had a wonderful children's department. In two weeks she will turn 21 and we will all look at that first birthday picture with that special hat and smile!

The loss of stores like Fligors makes me want to turn back the clock to the days when stores offered great merchandise and old fashioned customer service. They made shopping fun!
