“Real New Englanders, as we all know, do not wear showy new clothes.”
- Judson Hale, Inside New England
"Showy" and "New" are two words not in a real New Englander's vocabulary.
I love that about New Englander's. I live in Kentucky which according to most is Southern but to me it's more Mid-Atlantic. I just can't seem to be showy and prissy like what people think Southern Belles should be.I'm Tweedy and would feel right at home in the English country side with a horse and gun...sorry PETA readers.
Now that I live in the country I finally sort of blend in! I see the wives of the muckymuck wearing the same coats as me :O) I'm with Rachel - but it's also nice to be able to blend in at a charity gala :O)
Showy, never, but "new" is fine (and inevitable) in my book as long as it looks just like the old. (I'm a 13th generation New Englander!)
If you have something new, you have to disguise it by wearing it with something old. I DID go to NY today carrying a spiffy new Leatherman tote, but offset by Mom's hand-me-down fair isle ca. 1988, a motley stretched-out turtleneck and dusty Weejuns. ;)
Muffy,What do you mean by "showy?"Showy as in Nantucket reds with a white polo and a navysweater? Or showy as in vineyard vines pink club pants with a seer sucker jacket? Or neither? Or both?Definitely agree with the post overall though!!
